My Personal Club Med Valmorel, French Alps Experience
A couple of years ago I was fortunate enough to have spent a week skiing in the Alps in the French ski domain and home of Club Med Valmorel in Grande Domaine at an altitude of 1,460m.
I have had quite a bit of experience skiing, especially as a South African. I have learnt to ski in Kitzbuhel in Austria, spent some time in Aspen, Colorado as well as here in the Alps. Skiing in Europe is my preference. The pistes are long, there are so many domains to choose from and there is a culture, especially in the French Alps which I love.
My Skiing in France holiday began with a rather quite and peaceful flight from Johannesburg to Paris on board Air France’s amazing Airbus A380. After a short stop in Paris, we then boarded our flight onto Geneva, Switzerland which was not long at all. As we landed in Geneva, we were almost immediately welcomed by Club Med Valmorel representatives who was prepared for our arrival. Once we were all together, we where then taken through to where our Luxury Coaches was waiting for us, ready to head for the hills in Valmorel, France.
I imagine during poor weather, this drive from Geneva to Valmorel, could get a bit long, for us the journey was about 1 hour and 45 minutes. The drive is incredible pretty, especially when you begin to reach areas like the lake side town of Annecy.
As we arrived at the property, again there were Club Med Valmorel staff anticipating our arrival and whisked us through to our rooms. On the walk from the entrance to the rooms, I saw little bits of a lot of what was going on and it looked amazing.
The hotel itself is fantastic. With a variety of different rooms to suit all guests, the hotel also offers some amazing amenities for clients, all ideally situated. Such as the Kids Clubs being located between the rooms and the reception area so picking up and dropping off children at the children’s centers, is extremely easy. The Reception area to the hotel also serves as the entertainment center which boasts a large bar on one side and a number of Nespresso machines on the other with an assortment of premium coffees, tea’s and hot chocolates as well as a variety of soda’s from Coca Cola and Sprites to sparkling water and orange juice.
The main restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner is located right next to the reception and offers 4 uniquely decorated rooms representing the 4 seasons, and has 2 kitchens serving an extremely wide variety of cuisine in a buffet style. The upstairs speciality restaurant, which is included in the package, but requires guests to book, offers a late breakfast for those who missed the main breakfast seating and dinner with an incredible a la carte menu.
The resort also offers a Spa by Clarita*, an incredible indoor heated pool and outdoor jacuzzi.
It is well known that Club Med are amazing when it comes to providing facilities for families and this trend is definitely entrenched in their Valmorel property. Here they offer facilities for children from 4 months old! There is baby sitting* and what they like to call Pyjamas Club* as well as Baby*, Petit*, Mini Club Med and lastly Passworld which will keep guests under the age of 18 busy with some amazing activities.
* – These are at an additional cost.
If you have skied before, you will know that ski boots can become quite painful to walk in, but at Club Med Valmorel, this is not something you have to worry about.
This resort boasts “Ski-In Ski-Out” which blew my mind! On the ground floor of the Club Med Valmorel, you will find the ski room where you stop by on arrival day once you have settled in. Here you get measured up for your boot size, ski/snowboard size, poles, helmets, etc. Once you have found the perfect equipment, you are then taken through to your personal locker so that your ski equipment is yours for the duration of your stay and makes life a lot easier as you no longer need to walk back and forth to your room with all the large bulky jackets and beanies, goggles and gloves. It is also means that there is no queuing for your ski’s in the normal morning rush. When you’re ready to hit the slopes though, you simply gear up from your locker and then walk no more than 10 meters and you’ll find yourself in the snow on the side of this magnificent mountain range.
The slopes provide skiers and snowboards of all skill levels with 150km+ of amazing skiing. Once you have stepped outside the locker room you can then make your way down to the Gondalas that will take you high up into the mountain, ready for a day of skiing the 22 Green, 38 Blue, 17 Red and 8 Black slopes.
One great features about Club Med Valmorel which I really appreciated was the fact that your ski pass also gives you entry into the neighboring ski domain in Moûtiers, so you can experience a whole other town.
Valmorel itself is quite small. The main area of Valmorel is 1,5 km’s from the Club Med resort (Which there is a complimentary bus that travels back and forth) where you will find a handful of bars and restaurants as well as some boutique shops and local grocery stores, bakeries and deli’s.
There are a number of activities that you can do in this beautiful village besides skiing, ranging from the extreme such as Paragliding from the top of the mountain, to snow walks where you stop halfway and share some wine and cheeses whilst inside igloos.
I really enjoy my road and trail running and spent hours running around Valmorel with the constant view of the majestic Mont Blanc Mountain, whilst discovering hidden secrets such as beautiful wooden art sculptures donated by an artist, which has been placed all over the town, each with their own story.
